HEALTH & SAFETY PRACTICES

Keeping your family safe, while still having fun!

Updated October 12, 2020

As educators, our first priority is the health, safety, and security of the students in our care. We have worked with The Children’s Discovery Center to ensure that our programs follow multiple sources of advice, including directives from the W.H.O., C.D.C., and State of Hawai’i.

Some of our most important safety practices include:

The directives below apply to all staff & students.

  • Limit 12 students per class.
  • Limit 1 staff members per class.
  • Staff and students may not move between classes during the week.
  • It cannot be guaranteed that germs won’t be shared, as our students are young children. Parents will have to decide what they are comfortable with for their child and family.
  • If parents have concerns and expectations that exceed what we can control, they should consider waiting to register for in-person camps until they feel more comfortable.
  • All children and households must not have a travel history or have been in close contact with travelers outside of Oahu within a 14-day period of their first day of camp unless otherwise advised.
  • All children and households must not have come in contact with an individual who has tested positive for COVID-19 within a 14-day period of their first day of camp.
  • Each child’s temperature will be checked before entrance into the building and must register under 100 degrees without the aid of medication.
  • All children must enter into the building wearing a mask.
  • Hands, wrists, and fingernails must be washed often and well, with soap and hot water.
  • Hand-washing must be done when moving between any room or activity.
  • Refrain from touching your face, eyes, nose, mouth, or hair.
  • Do not use hand sanitizer as a substitute for hand-washing.
  • If a student cannot follow hygiene guidelines after repeated corrections, they may be sent home.

Masks will be worn at all times.

Masks may only be removed for eating or drinking.
  • Immediately wash your hands.
  • Do not wipe your nose with a body part or your clothing.
  • Throw away tissues after one use.
  • Do not touch anything until your hands are clean.
  • Stay home if you feel unwell in any way.
  • Do not use medications to conceal symptoms. Antihistamines are allowed for allergies.
  • If you have seasonal allergies, please notify staff ahead of time. Communicate clearly and consistently about your allergy symptoms and be honest with yourself if you feel unwell.
  • We reserve the right to send an individual home if they are presenting any of the following symptoms: fever, sniffling, runny nose, sneezing, excessive coughing, wheezing, trouble breathing, aching, chills, vomiting, diarrhea, etc.
  • Parents will be called and the ill individual will be isolated from the group until they are picked up.
  • Individuals may not return to camp until they are symptom-free for 24 hours without the aid of medication.
  • Children may not touch each other.
  • No handshakes, hugs, or high-fives – instead, greet others by waving, nodding, or giving “foot-fives”.
  • Students may not have their hands held or sit/hang/cling on to staff.
  • Students may only be picked up or carried in urgent situations or emergencies.
  • Gloves will be worn when handling student food.
  • Utensils will be used whenever possible.
  • Do not lick your fingers or dig your nose.
  • Wash your clothes as soon as you get home. Do not wear an item again until it has been washed.
  • Skip the laundry basket and go straight to the washer. This will keep any possible germs from transferring to your laundry basket. Wash your hands after starting the wash.

Staff will space students at a distance where possible, and in a way best suited to the space being used.

  • Students may not share food, magic supplies, or art supplies.
  • Students may not put any objects in or around their eyes, nose, or mouth.
  • Galleries are cleaned thoroughly after every use. Programs will use different galleries from each other each day to further reduce any risk.
  • In the event there are two concurrent magic camps, they will both use the same gallery (one class in the AM, one class in the PM). The gallery will be sanitized between visits.
  • Use a paper towel to turn off bathroom faucets and to open bathroom doors.
  • Assume that most objects have not been recently sanitized, so be mindful of transferring germs from one object/surface to another.
  • Use elbows, arms, or shoulders to open doors, press buttons, and flip light switches.
  • Disinfect high-touch surfaces like tables, seats, door handles, light switches daily.
  • Clean any high-use personal items like phones, laptops, smartwatches, etc.
